Finding Strength in Pain: A Christian Devotion on God’s Mercy and Faith

Welcome to today’s devotion. My name is Grace, and I am so glad you are here. Today, I want us to take a closer look at our lives, or perhaps the lives of those around us—people we may know who are going through pain, hardship, or a season of brokenness. Sometimes, all you can say is: “Lord, have mercy on them.”

Faith does not prevent pain; instead, faith anchors us. It gives us the strength to endure difficulties, reminding us that we are not alone. Even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, God is with us. Jesus never promised us a life without pain. In John 16:33, He said: “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

What you are going through is not new to mankind. The Bible reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:13: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

The big question is: Where do you seek help when you are tempted or broken? Do you go to people who tell you, “You must have done something wrong, that’s why your life is in chaos”? Or do you go to God—the One who has the real answers? God has promised that you will not be tempted beyond what you can handle. Whatever you are facing, He knows you are able to endure it. Even more, He has promised to provide a way out. That is very good news, because it means God has not left us alone to figure it out.

Our pain and brokenness often deepen our purpose. It is during those hard seasons that we discover the power and strength God has placed within us. But this only happens when we choose to put our full trust in Him.

In Isaiah 43:2, God promises: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Think about it: pain so intense that it is compared to fire. Yet, God says you will not be consumed. Why? Because He is with you—to guide you, to hold you, and sometimes even to carry you when the road feels unbearable.

Maybe you have lost a loved one. Maybe you are battling a disease. Maybe your relationship has ended, your dreams are shattered, or nothing in life seems to be working. Maybe you feel like Job—everything around you is broken down. But I want to remind you again: there is hope.

In Job 14:7, the Bible says: “There is hope for a tree: if it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.” It does not matter how far you have been cut down—God can make you sprout again in Jesus’ mighty name. Job endured unimaginable pain, but at the end of his story, God rebuilt him. And today, I am here to tell you: no matter how broken your situation looks, God is still the God who rebuilds.

Give Him a chance to walk with you through every step of your pain, and you will come out victorious.

Prayer:
Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, we ask You for wisdom to invite You into our pain. Walk with us, carry us when we are weak, and give us victory in every situation. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
